Can I open the door to see how far from the line I am?

Yes, if the handbrake is on and the car is in neutral.

But remember, before you open the door - is it safe to do so. Have you checked the blind spot for example?

To avoid opening the door you could:

Lean forward and look for the line in the mirror
Look out the window for the line

With practice you will get a feel for where the car is in the bay and shouldn't need to open the door.
